Stringer vs. Block Pallets: Which One Is Right for Your Load?

Most wooden pallets fall into one of two categories: stringer pallets and block pallets. Both move products safely, but they handle differently and suit different loads. Choosing the right one can improve handling speed, reduce damage, and even lower freight costs. Stringer pallets are built from three or more parallel pieces of timber called stringers. The top deck boards are fastened to these stringers to create the finished platform. In their basic form, stringer pallets are two-way entry, meaning a forklift can pick them up from the front or back. When notches are cut into the stringers, they become partial four-way entry pallets, giving warehouse teams more flexibility without the full cost of a block design. Block pallets, sometimes called "Manoj pallets," use both parallel and perpendicular stringers joined by solid wood blocks at the corners and center. This construction makes them typically stronger than stringer pallets and allows true four-way entry. A pallet jack or forklift can engage a block pallet from any side, which is a major advantage in tight warehouse aisles or high-volume cross-docking operations. There is also the perimeter base pallet, which offers additional bottom deck coverage and is often used when extra stability is needed for heavy or uneven loads. So which one should you choose? If your operation relies on fast pallet-jack handling from multiple directions, block pallets are usually the better fit.
